The Hsiao Hsi Yuan Puppet Theater The Hsiao Hsi Yuan Puppet Theater is one of Taiwan's few folk drama groups that specialize in the traditional style of puppet theater performance. They use large Chuanchow-style wooden puppets, which perform to the accompaniment of peikuan music. Meanwhile the performance is further enriched by the inclusion of dramatic plots, stage mannerisms and singing styles borrowed from Peking opera. The puppet theater was founded in 1913 and has been handed down from father to son. Its technical virtuosity and authentic performing style have brought the Hsaio Hsi Yuan Puppet Theater from the countryside into the city, from streets into schools, and from Taiwan onto the international scene. In 1983 they traveled to Japan toured for three weeks. In June 2001, the troupe toured Central America, performing to rave reviews in Nicaragua, Panama, and Costa Rica. Hsaio Hsi Yuan also gave performance tours in France, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, the United States, Canada, South Africa, Australia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and mainland China, delighting audiences everywhere. In response to one of their stellar performances in Germany, a critic from the Lippishe Rundshau wrote that the troupe members are "great artists, acrobats, and jugglers." Likewise, a writer from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said they were "master of a delicate art." Dulcie Leimbach of the New York Times wrote "For aficionados, the chance to see these hand puppets in their elaborate Chinese costumes and to hear traditional north-pipe music is an opportunity to dip into a history and culture far removed from American soil." |
