Art of the Zodiac: Celebrating the Year of the Sheep

To greet the Year of the Sheep in the Chinese calendar, an art exhibition ˇ§Art of the Zodiac: Celebrating the Year of the Sheepˇ¨, will be on display from January 27, 2003 through February 21, 2003 at the Daley Civic Center in Chicago.

This exhibition will feature many distinguished artists and crafts persons, such.  The collection includes more than 60 pieces of artwork of various media from Taiwan such as water colors, stone carvings, stone printing, pottery, crystal, glass, wood carvings, bronzes, bamboo weavings and work in modern materials. 

The day of the opening ceremony, master stone carver Mr. Pei-tse Chen has been invited to demonstrate his craft and create carvings on the spot.  The audience will have the unique opportunity to observe the artist at work. and receive a gift.

This exhibition is sponsored by the Council for Cultural Affairs, Executive Yuan, Republic of China (Taiwan), the Taipei Cultural Center of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, the Information Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago, and the Daley Civic Center, City of Chicago.  Since 1995, similar annual art exhibitions have been displayed in Taiwanˇ¦s galleries in New York and Paris.  The works included in this collection were selected, examined and compiled by the National Taiwan Craft Research Institute. Works by artists such as a Heinrich Wang, Kuang-I Lin, Cheng-Fang Lin, and Pei-tse Chen reflect the high caliber and variety of the chosen pieces, and the theme allowed for a unique and refreshing approach to the display.

The Daley Civic Center, a venue owned and operated by the Chicago city government, has a history of hosting activities and displays reflecting the rich cultural diversity of the city and its people.  Its mission is right in line with the purpose of this exhibition from Taiwan to promote cross-cultural understanding and is also an excellent choice to draw a large and diverse crowd to view the art work.

Following the close of the Chicago exhibition on February 21st, the entire collection will be transferred to Los Angeles, where it will be on display at the Sun Ten Museum, Irvine, California.
